Birds at Fogg Dam
To get to Fogg Dam
(located inn the northernmost area of the Northern Teritory), you must leave Darwin
turning east on the Arnhem Highway. In about an hour you can reach, the wetland area of
Fogg Dam which is surrounded by rainforests and paperbark swamps.
It has an enormous population of waterbirds and it has become one of the Top End's
favorite bird-watching areas. Waterbirds can thrive in this attractive man-made habitat
which is well protected against abuse and poaching.
The Dam was built in the late 1950's to service the short-lived rice growing plantations
nearby. Since then, the area has served as a wildlife sanctuary. There are viewing
platforms along the Dam wall and walking tracks. The roads are deliberately narrow as the
reserve is meant to be a true wildlife sanctuary where humans are just
"visitors".
