El Calafate and Lake Argentino
The water level of Lake
Argentino is maintained relatively constant by the uninterrupted flow of icebergs that
break off from and descend from the Glaciers that are located near the Andean divide. In
turn, Lago Argentino feeds the Rio Santa Cruz, the Largest river in Southern Patagonia.
Puerto Bandera is 30 miles (45 Km.)
from El Calafate. To get there one must travel on a captivating rough and unpaved road.
This is where launches and catamarans will take you to the Northern Arm of Lake.
The navigation takes place among
spectacular huge ice bergs and floes of numerous sizes and shapes.
The Upsala and Onelli Glaciers are
the first to be seen while the Bahia Onelli can be reached after a half mile stroll (800
Mt.) through a forest. Lake Onelli is a smallish mirror like basin of water full of
numerous ice floes.
