Hippos
Hippopotamus
("hippo" for short) means River Horse in Greek. Every year, Hippo's are
responsible for the largest number of human injuries and casualties in Africa. They are
very dangerous to approach in the water as they can overturn and crush a boat without any
difficulty at all.
A grown hippo can weigh 3 tons. Be
careful: a big yawn is a sign of aggressiveness and not at all of sleepiness. Don't ever
get too close to a hippo even on land as they can run at speeds in excess of 25 m.p.h. (40
km).
Hippos like rivers with deep
Water. They also like reed beds, grassland, lagoons and lakes and have been known to swim
in salt water lagoons close to the sea. They can see and hear under water and are
perfectly insulated. Although Hippos are extremely plump, they have no fat under
their skin
