Les Baux de Provence

The village of Les Baux de Provence is situated in the heart of the
Northwestern Alps on a rocky plateau 700 feet (245 Mt.) above sea level.

The village had its first settlements during the Iron Age, but it reached its historical and artistic peaks during the Middle Ages.

Les Baux became famous during the mid 19th century because of the discovery of efficient and inexpensive methods of transforming "bauxite" (from the name of the town) into aluminum.

Today the ruins of the ancient village blend in with ancient rocks forming an almost artistic blending of the works of human endeavor and the works of nature.
