Namibia - Skeleton Coast
Skeleton coast is located on the
Atlantic coast of Namibia at the southern border of Angola.
The Skeleton Coast is named because of the skeletons of numerous ships that were wrecked
along the coast line as well as bones scattered on its beaches.
The attraction of this remote area
lies in the color, changing moods and untouched profile of its landscape.
Dense coastal fog and cold sea breezes caused by the cold Benguela ocean current from the
Arctic create a halo of mystery that contributes to its charm
The Skeleton Coast Park which covers
more than a million and a half hectares, extends from the Ugab River in the South to the
Kunene River on the Angolan border. The landscape in the park ranges from sweeping vistas
of wind swept dunes to rugged canyons with walls of richly colored volcanic rock and
extensive mountain ranges. Its level coastline characterizes the park, only occasionally
broken by scattered rocky outcrops.
Springbok, oryx, ostrich, hyena and ostrich are fairly common, while Namibia's famous
Desert Elephant, black rhino, lion and giraffe are found in the dry river beds.
